LGBTQIA+

I am committed to offering sensitive, non-judgmental, mental health support to the LGBTQIA+ community, and to providing a safe and welcoming space in which to deliver client-centred support that is sensitive to the complex needs of LBGTQIA+ clients.

Being trans, gender diverse, same sex attracted, or questioning can be tough. You may need support with navigating the process of affirming your sexual orientation and sexual preferences, or with gender identity expression or gender transition. Or you may want to talk about coming out to family members, friends, and the wider community. Alternatively, you may want counselling for problems unrelated to your sexuality and gender, but from a therapist who will not judge you on the grounds of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

Despite LGBTQIA+ people making up a significant part of Australian society, the prospect of coming out as same sex attracted, trans or gender diverse can be very scary, and it is natural to have concerns around being rejected and experiencing prejudice. Discrimination and exclusion are at the core of the many challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people who, subsequently, experience poorer mental health and higher rates of suicide than other Australians (source: The 2013 National LGBTI Health Alliance report).

Therapy can play a key role in supporting LGBTQIA+ people, addressing issues such as: depression and anxiety; problems with self-esteem and self-identity; resilience and transition. Therapy can help you to improve your self-confidence, build on your coping skills; develop your sense of identity, and generally feel more secure in who you are.
